Trip Notes
Some of the peaks I attempted to climb are located outside of Montenegro. To avoid long driving and thus wasting time they can be climbed from Montenegrin side. For Maja e Jezerces even the marked trail is crossing the border itself. There are no official border-crossings though and a permit is needed to cross the border. To obtain such permit you need to visit border police unit - from Vusanje the closest one is located in Plav. Be aware that depending on the actual staff on duty English won’t help you much to communicate with the officers so learning a couple of Serbian words will do the job. The permit cost was 5 Eur per person in 2021. In practice there was no need to present it to anyone.
Traffic is right-sided and all the main roads are of good quality, mountain serpentines wide enough and well marked. Local roads could be more problematic and sometimes occasionally covered in holes. More challenging is getting used to native citizen’s driving style. So cars parked on the pavement, zebra crossing or even in the middle of the city street is a real possibility to witness. When entering intersections, roundabout the priority gets to the driver who has blasted the horn as first. Speed limits are sometimes absurd at long and straight stretches, haven’t noticed speed cameras.
I rented the car from ProAuto rental company, no deposit was needed but car was thoroughly checked on return although I had a FDW also for undercar parts and tyres. The price of rent was 270 EUR per week for Skoda Fabia (September 2021) Despite having insurance calling the police was mandatory on any damages done to the car, without it the liability was moved to the renting person.
When it comes to petrol it’s price seemed to be fixed so it doest not really matter where your planing to refuel the car. In Gusinje area there’s a problem with petrol availability, petrol station in Plav was closed down and the only one in operation was as far as Andrijevica and it was not 24/7.
Gas for the cooking stove can be bought in Okov store. It’s not a typical gas tin, its deodorant shaped. There is no shop in Vusanje, to get basic stuff you need to go to Gusinje, they have small markets that will supply you with every fundamental need.
