Review of Thule Stir 20l

The Thule Stir 20L is a lightweight, durable, and minimalist daypack tailored for fast-and-light outdoor adventures. Featuring a streamlined, narrow profile and reasonably comfortable straps, it performs exceptionally well during dynamic activities like climbing and ski touring. However, its simple top-loading construction means reaching items at the bottom can be inconvenient, and the stripped-down design lacks extra gear loops for attaching external equipment.

Mostly used for:

Single day climbing, scrambling and hiking trips. Works also for short skitouring trips. Because of capacity not suitable for winter trips that require carrying of more gear. Used on mountaineering trips as a second rucksack for summit attack.

Pros & Cons of Thule Stir 20l

Pros:

  • Narrow construction good for climbing and skitouring
  • Rope can be carried on top of the rucsack extending the space inside
  • Comfortable back straps and reasonably comfortable hip straps
  • Easy access to side pockets while having it on the back
  • Weight - roughly half a kilogram
  • Durability - no major problems despite intensive and frequent usage
  • Extendable - loops on front of the rucksack plus a cord can work wonders to attach almost anything
  • Works well with hydration systems

Cons:

  • Construction - good only for sunny days because of open pocket on the top, practically helpless during the rain unless custom protection is used
  • Something is on the bottom - everything above needs to go out
  • Hide pocket for keys is hard to reach when fully loaded - same with removing water bag
  • No additional clips for poles, iceaxe, pads
  • A bit stinky - even after cleaning and although properly ventillated
