Trip overview

Bivak II na Jezerih is located on the Jezerih plateau above Vrata valley. It serves as a base for climbs in the nearby peaks of Martuljek Group - Veliki Rokav, Veliki Oltar, Dovški Križ and Šplevta. It offers 6 sleeping places and a table to eat at. There is no water in the bivouac or in the immediate vicinity. We need to bring our own, there's a stream on the way up.

As already mentioned, Veliki Oltar - Visoki Rokav ridge crossing can be done in one day and this shelter is optional for those who want to split the trip into two days.

Route description

Bivak II na Jezerih - approach description:

In Poldov Rovt we enter a distinct path into the forest and use it to climb gently to the left towards Rdeči potok. Just before reaching the stream, a path branches off to the right across Brinje (with a cairn here). It then leads to a torrential riverbed, where we initially ascend along the right side before crossing over to the left. We follow the ravine until a small wall blocks the way, where a spring is found (last chance to refill water supply). From here, the path turns right and climbs steeply through a traversing passage in the wall - watch out, exposed in places. We soon emerge from the forest onto the scree beneath the “Little Matterhorn”. We turn slightly right and make a short ascent up the grassy slope, followed by another climb across the scree. Then we can continue on the scree or climb the rocks directly below the bivouac.

Trip conditions

Trail:

Path is not marked, there are occasional cairns but not very numerous. In the lower part the path is not that obvious to follow in places. While going up you will notice that there are sometimes two parallel paths. The one running through the scree is meant for the descent. Always look for firm ground and try to keep away from scree as long as possible.

Additional information

Tips and author's comments:

According to official information, there are 6 spots to sleep inside the bivouac. That might be true if including the floor and table, but the sleeping area with mattresses surely won't suffice for more than 4 people unless they are willing to squeeze and sacrifice some comfort. That was the case for me and my partner - although only 4 people were inside, we decided to sleep outside the bivouac and get some fresh air. We were prepared for that possibility and had brought sleeping pads, and we used blankets from the bivouac to make it more comfortable and warmer.

Dangers:

Path to the bivouac is partially exposed in very short sections, there is no additional protection.
